What is Anchoring in NLP and how does it happen?

NLP Triggers, what are they?

So what really is anchoring in NLP? Our lives are filled with triggers, loops of emotional states ignited by a smell, a song, a taste, or a feeling. Can you remember the song which always takes you back to a first date, or the smell of fresh Jasmine, whisking you back to a favorite holiday? Most triggers are created without us even knowing it, in our subconscious, and while we can think of lots of positive memories, triggers can also cause years of suffering. This is a naturally occurring Anchor.

If you suffer from anxiety, or your child gets stressed and panicked every time they see something specific, then this may be a symptom of a negative anchor. In NLP, we utilise a strategy called anchoring to elicit positive emotions and states quickly. This can rapidly calm someone with anxiety or make someone suffering with depression smile.

Replacing unwanted anchors with positive ones, or breaking the loop, is something that can change your life for the better, and it works almost immediately.

How does anchoring work?

Anchoring works by creating a link between a stimulus (trigger) and a desired emotional state. The stimulus can be anything from a smell to a sound to a physical sensation. The desired emotional state can be anything from happiness to calmness to confidence.

Once the anchor is set, you can trigger the desired emotional state simply by using the stimulus. For example, if you anchor a feeling of calmness to the smell of lavender, you can calm yourself down simply by smelling lavender.

How can anchoring be used to improve your life?

Anchoring can be used to improve your life in many ways. Here are a few examples:

Reduce anxiety and stress: If you suffer from anxiety or stress, anchoring can help you to calm down quickly and easily. For example, you could anchor a feeling of calmness to the sound of your own voice or to the sensation of your feet on the ground.

Boost your confidence: If you lack confidence, anchoring can help you to feel more confident in yourself. For example, you could anchor a feeling of confidence to your power pose or to a positive affirmation.

Improve your performance: If you want to improve your performance in a particular area, such as at work or in sports, anchoring can help you to get into the right state of mind. For example, you could anchor a feeling of focus and determination to a specific image or sound.

Improve your relationships: Anchoring can also be used to improve your relationships with others. For example, you could anchor a feeling of love and connection to your partner or child.

How to set an anchor

Setting an anchor is a simple process. Here are the steps involved:

Choose the stimulus that you want to use as your anchor.
Get into the desired emotional state.
Apply the stimulus.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 several times.

For example, if you want to anchor a feeling of calmness to the smell of lavender, you would first get into a state of calmness. You could do this by imagining yourself in a peaceful place or by thinking about a time when you felt calm. Once you are in a state of calmness, you would smell the lavender. You would then repeat steps 2 and 3 several times.

After you have set the anchor, you can trigger the desired emotional state simply by using the stimulus. In this example, you could simply smell the lavender to calm yourself down.
